A disturbing preconception. I never said I cared, only that I enjoy their company rather less.

They do not comprehend the magnitude of the issue. I have succeeded only in acknowledgement of the problem of late.

If you enjoyed their company in the first place, it is a kind of caring, isn't it? You care that they talk to you, and you acknowledge that they are good company!

That is a good first step. Perhaps you need to tell them that it bothers you, not just that it is a failing on their part.
